Misconceptions of Adopted Dogs
1.) Shelter dogs are old.
This is incorrect. Although, yes, animal shelters have older dogs, they also usually have puppies and middle-age dogs as well. Animal shelters also typically have tons of kittens which are available to foster or adopt.
2.) Shelters do not have purebreds for adoption.
This is also, incorrect. If you wanted a specific breed, there are many organizations which rescue only golden retrievers, Australian shepherds, etc. Although there are many mixed breeds in an animal shelter, there are purebreds as well.
3.) Shelter dogs are dirty.
Depending on the shelter, the dogs should not be dirty. Although when they are rescued, they typically look a little ragged, but they go through a whole cleaning process. When brought to the shelter, the dogs are spayed/neutered, groomed, and medicated.
4.) Shelter dogs have behavior problems.
People think that there is something wrong with the dogs, which is why they are in a shelter in the first place. This is incorrect. There are many different reasons as to why a dog may be in a shelter. Although, yes, it is possible to get an imperfect dog, but no dog is perfect and will need further training no matter the circumstance.
